Telephone interviews can be nerve racking. There are ways however, of making things go a little more smoothly…

If you have successfully written an impressive, high quality CV and covering letter you may well be invited to an interview. Occasionally, you may be asked to take part in a telephone interview. The telephone interview is quite uncommon and is generally used when the position in question will require a great deal of time talking on the telephone for example credit controlling or building client relationships. It is a good way for employers to assess your telephone manner.

The telephone interview is similar to the one-to-one interview and should be taken just a seriously. You may not have the concern of what to wear, but you should be equally as prepared. Remember that when talking to an employer over the phone, you do not have the advantage of body language – so show enthusiasm!

Your interviewer will definitely ask you to elaborate on your CV and will ask various other questions regarding your job history. They will most likely ask about your hobbies and what you enjoy to do in your spare time. The questions will be of the same caliber as they would in a normal, face-to-face meeting.

One big advantage of the telephone interview is that your interviewer cannot see you. This leaves you free to have some helpful hints in front of you incase you loose your train of thought. It is helpful to write a list of your skills as well as the most commonly asked interview questions (and corresponding answers). This will make you more prepared and there for more confident.

Having a copy of your CV in front of you is important. Your interviewer will most certainly have a copy at hand and it is vital that you have the same information, should you get a difficult question regarding your job history and are unable to remember certain details. By roughly noting down some of your accountancy skills and qualifications that are relevant to the position, you will be able to adapt your notes to answer corresponding questions sufficiently.

Think about the skills that are required for an accountancy role. Some of these include:

• Numerical Skills
• Organization
• Presentation
• Telephone Skills
• Logical Mind
• Methodical approach

When writing this list of skills and attributes, it is important not to embellish. If your interviewer asks if you have done/ can do a certain thing, tell the truth. If you haven’t, you can be taught.

Be professional and well spoken with out sounding cocky or the use of any slang language. Do not talk over your interviewer, eat, drink or have any back ground noise during the interview.

Once this interview sounds as though it is drawing to a close - ask questions! Interviewers are more impressed with candidates that take an interest in the company in question. If your interviewer talks about something you do not understand, write it down and ask at the end.
