Volleyball may look like a very easy game to play. But it can be very competitive especially when played between two teams. Thus one has to know the basic rules and techniques in order to play competitive football. Here are some basic things one should need to know about this sport.
The volleyball court is an indoor court that is 9 by 18 meters in space, with the attack line 3 meters away from the center line. For outdoor volleyball courts it should be at least 9 by 9 meters.
An actual volleyball weighs around 9 to 10 ounces. The ball pressure should be around 4.3 to 4.6 pound. On the other hand the net should be around 32 by 3 feet. Height of the net varies for women¡¯s and men¡¯s games. For women¡¯s games the elevation of the net must be 2.24 meters, while for men¡¯s game should be around 2.43 meters.
Volleyball players can wear short or long sleeved shirts, plus shorts tailored from flexible fabric. Shirts that have long sleeves are preferred especially if sliding on the court is needed. Long sleeve shirts protect the forearm especially when sliding. Players are also protected with padding, particularly on the knees, hips, and elbows. Especially when they dive, reach, and slide to continue the ball in play. Also, shoes must have good support for the ankles, and also provide flexibility and comfort. Players must not have any kind of jewelry while playing, since this reduces the risk of injuries on the hand, wrist, and head, especially if the player wears rings, bracelets, and earrings.
Now lets go to the basic skills in playing volleyball. There are two major hand positions in volleyball: wrapped fist hand which means you take a fist with a hand, and wrap it using the palm of the other hand. The other major hand position is the cupped palm, where the hands are brought together in a cup figure while the thumbs are laid across the top.
There are also two ways to serve: overhand and underhand. The first type is usually used for competitive games. The player tosses the ball above the head, then steps slightly forward before hitting the ball with the other hand.
Passing is another important facet of playing volleyball, it is done to assist another player for a spike, or plainly keeping the ball in play. Forearm pass is usually done to pass the volleyball.
The setter is an important cog in a volleyball game because he or she controls the offense, deciding the player who will spike or strike the ball toward the opponent¡¯s court. To set a player, place the hands above your head with the thumbs underneath. Hit the ball using the fingers, and not the palm.
Of course, one has to hit the ball in order to force the opponent in losing a point. There are varied methods in hitting a ball which is in play. However without doubt the most thrilling play in all of volleyball is the spike, which is a type of hit wherein the player jumps up towards the net to hit the ball hard right into the court of the opponent.
Then there¡¯s blocking, wherein the player stays close to the net to hinder the opponent¡¯s shot, often a spike attempt.
