I took my car to an auto detailing place the other day, and the guy in charge informed me that I had been neglecting my car for years. I was shocked. I adhere to all the requirements in my manual, take in the car for oil changes on schedule and keep it clean. But as car wax was being put on my car, the employee kept shaking his head. After he was finished with the car wax, he came over to give me an earful. "The paint is all oxidized. What were you thinking?" I guess years of not using car wax is an offense so big, that I deserved public embarrassment. There were lots of other customers, sitting in their suits like me, glancing over to get a look at me being reprimanded. I have nothing but adoration for my car. I did not mean to harm it. Luckily, I was saved by the guy who put my car wax on.
You can protect the paint on your car with car wax. Car wax is to car paint, as conditioner is to hair for a person. It forms a barrier to shield from outside elements. In addition, it makes your car sparkle as if it were new and hides scratches. Regular application of car wax can keep your car looking new. You can go to the professional or do it yourself. In fact, I may be doing it at home to avoid any more embarrassing lectures from the car detail guys. There are so many different kinds of car wax out there and they all are dependent upon how you apply them and when. According to "Consumer Reports," many of the less expensive types were just as good as the expensive ones.
To properly apply car wax, your car should first be clean and dry. It is a good idea to check for any dirt that may be hiding in weird places before you start. If you start waxing over the grit, it could scratch your car. Move your car to a shady spot to wax. Do not attempt to do this on a frigid day, as your labors will not yield much success. Rub the car wax on in circular patterns, using a soft cloth that will not scratch your paint. It is best to apply the wax in sections, so you can tell where you have been. Wait for the applied car wax to get cloudy before you remove it. Use a clean, dry cloth to remove the wax in circular patterns. Shake out the cloth frequently, so you do not get any build up. After you have finished and your car is nice and shiny, sit down and ice your sore rubbing arm. You arm may be tired, but you will not have to do it again for a few months. It is ideal to apply a new coat of car wax every quarter.
