Understanding International Credit Card Charges

Nearly all credit card companies in the USA, except one, will charge a two to three percent foreign transaction fee if your card is used abroad. Until recently, many credit card companies did not clearly disclose these fees in their terms and conditions.

There were many people who received notification of a class action lawsuit settlement earlier this year in regard to these fees. Now that the lawsuit has been settled, credit card companies are required to clearly state foreign and international transaction charges on credit card applications.

You will most likely find that your credit card company charges three percent for all international transactions if you get in touch with their customer service. It can be very expensive on the purse to pay an extra three percent on every purchase, but these charges can be avoided.

The foreign currency rate you will receive from your bank may be much better than that of a foreign currency exchange booth.

When a debit card is used as a credit card, there may be some risks, but ATM withdrawals are free of foreign transaction charges as a general rule. Better fraud protection can come from a credit card than from a debit card and this is a good reason to not use a debit card to make purchases abroad.

If an unscrupulous merchant overcharged or fraudulently used your credit card, you can easily contest the charges and get a refund. If your debit card was used fraudulently , you will not only be faced with an empty bank account, but you will find that it takes longer to receive any type of refund.

It seems that the best way to pay no international transaction fees is through credit card use of the ones that charge no fees; these no fee credit cards give you security without the added espense.

It pays to know how much you'll spend; this is great for day-to-day life but it's even more important on vacation, ATM transactions carry a small fee...for each transaction. Unless you are on a very exacting budget, it is difficult to be able to judge how much to withdraw in one ATM transaction and few people can tell precisely how much cash they will need while traveling. It can also be difficult to find a cash machine in many countries, but you have to be careful to not withdraw an excessive amount of cash, which carries a theft risk. You will find that you have to pay a fee to convert funds back to your local currency as well as the fees that were paid to convert to foreign currency.

You can use the safe alternative of traveler’s checks instead of cash, but there is a fee charged when they are purchased and they are not accepted everywhere.

When applying for the credit card you believe will not charge any additional fees for foreign purchases be sure you study the terms and conditions carefully to be absolutely sure you are getting the right card. Check the terms before using the card and be sure you can pay off the balance quickly if it has a high interest rate...or you're simply paying fees a different way.
