This winter season, people in South Dakota should be prepared to use an alternate water supply and stock food for possible winter storms and power outages.
One could never know when a catastrophe could hit South Dakota. Being prepared in times such as these would help eliminate all possible worries and probably save you and your family when this happens.
If you're a resident of South Dakota and you are in the middle of a power outage where you are not sure of the cleanliness of your water resource, it is highly recommended that you get your daily resources especially water in an area that you know has been treated or disinfected. In case your water resources are confirmed to be contaminated, then all the more reason to find immediate solutions for clean water.
There is also the consideration of choosing the right resources of containers to store the water in. These containers could be plastic, fiberglass or glass containers; the important thing is that these containers should be specifically made for the purpose of storing water. In South Dakota as in anywhere else in the country, it is not advisable to use trashcan liners because there would still be chemicals in the bag itself which could transfer to the food or water if used.
When buying from a water station, one could find a five-gallon dispensing container which is a great choice for storing water. And do not forget to cover water containers to keep microorganisms out.
Of course when in the process of storing water, it is also important to thoroughly wash and clean the containers before using them. This involves washing, rinsing and after sanitizing.
Being always prepared in this time of crisis should be done by those who are living in South Dakota. It is much better to gather seven-day emergency resources of food supply and select foods that don't include cooking or heating and should not be perishable.
A good recommendation for emergency food resources are canned foods which could be a variety of fruit, vegetable, poultry, fish, red meat, juice and soups. Also suitable for these situations are ready-to-eat cereals, powdered milk, dried fruits, crackers, nuts and the like.
Naturally, the need to prepare for an emergency should also include over-the-counter prescriptions and medications.
Do not put foods in the snow to keep them frozen since they may still easily thaw and if the food gets exposed to the sun's rays this may cause the food to acquire food-borne bacteria.
An alternative to this is to take advantage of this situation and make ice. But of course don't use the snow to make such. Use empty milk cartons, buckets, cans or plastic sealing bags and fill them with water then leave them outside to freeze. After it freezes, you can use them and place in your refrigerator, freezer or coolers.
These reminders are all precautions of possible safety procedure one can do, not only for the people living in South Dakota who experiences different calamities but for all those people who wants to feel safe during a winter catastrophe.
