When you want to get a web domain name for a new business or a personal site, or to reserve your own given name as a dot com, the process is very simple.

Right at the start, decide on the name you want. Many of the internet domain services, like Godaddy, offer various tools which you can use. You enter any domain name, and they will reveal if the domain name is owned by someone or not. If it is not registered, you can register it. If it is already owned by another person, then the internet registration service will offer you varieties of the name to consider, or you could consider other suffixes, such as .net, .org or even .mobi.

Although .com domain names are still the most well-recognized, the daily hits you will get to your new web site will depend on your optimization and promotion abilities and will have not much to do with the domain extension, so don't be to worried if you don't get the .com version of the domain name you would like.

So, you have found the name you love, and it is not already owned by another person or business, how do you proceed?

Going to a domain site like Godaddy, and having done the search for a name and confirmed that it is not already taken, you will then click on a 'Proceed to Checkout' button or something like it.

You can also choose the number of years you want to make the registration last – from 1 to 10 years. If you have big plans for the web site, or want it as an investment, go for a higher figure. If the registered domain is just for resale, choose a shorter period.

You will then have to type in your name and address and email contact details. When you own a company, you should also enter the company name. This information is used for the internet domain registration – the domain name is recorded as legally yours, for the time period you have chose for the registration. Officially, you become the 'registrant' of the name, and no-one else can have it.

Following on with the registration, you should select if your registration is to be public, or protected (or 'private'). A public registration will mean that any persion using a Whois lookup service has the ability to look up the domain name and see who owns it. When thinking about the website you are going to create, you may consider paying the small additional charge for a protected registration which hides your details will be a good idea to avoid spam or other unwanted contact.

Having made your selection, you can give your credit card or Paypal details, agree to the payment amount, and the domain becomes your own, for the period of years you have selected. A good registrar like Godaddy will remind you, using the email address you registered with, when the date comes to renew the registration of your domain name.

Internet domain registration is really as easy as that!
