If you want to make sure you're protected by NC lemon law, one of the most important things you can do as a new vehicle owner is save all documentation--including repair orders and repair invoices--of any work you had done on your vehicle while it was under warranty. Make sure that all of your documents contain the right information, especially in terms of what your complaints were at the time you took the vehicle in.
You should receive a repair order, or ¡°R.O.," every time you drop off your vehicle at the repair shop. Make sure you always get one of these, and that it contains accurate, detailed accounts of all the problems you want addressed. If you're not careful, staff at the mechanic's shop or dealership personnel could "adjust" your repair orders in an attempt to minimize, hide, or avoid addressing any or all of your complaints.
Under the lemon law, North Carolina based, the Motor Vehicle Repair Act states that a repair person must give a repair order to the customer and obtain their signature before attempting any repairs. In other words, under law, you are supposed to authorize the mechanic to repair the vehicle. This North Carolina lemon law statute also states that the repair shop must provide an invoice to the customer when they come to pick up the car. This invoice must outline in detail everything that was done to correct the customer's problems. Many dealerships and mechanics neglect to give repair orders or invoices to the customer, so that they themselves can fill in the blanks, leaving off any problems they were unable to solve. That's why, here in North Carolina, lemon law and consumer rights statutes (and attorneys, for that matter) are available to help us through these situations, and hopefully help us emerge from the ordeal with compensation for our losses and our heads on straight.
