How much do you, as a band and as individuals, interact with the people buying your music? How much do you interact with other musicians? These are important things to consider, as they can shape the path of your career. Consider- the Grateful Dead didn't pay the people who opened for them. Their take on it- it was a privilege to open for them as the audience exposure would be absolutely massive (this was clearly after a certain point in their career, of course). Despite the lack of pay, countless numbers of musicians decided to take the opportunity anyway and where vastly rewarded for their efforts by album sales, merchandise sales, publicity and popularity.

Fans like to have interaction with their favorite bands, and that usually isn't really possible with a lot of the big name bands that have made it today. They are already so high up there with their fame and their monetary standing that album sales, tour dates, royalties, etc don't create that same need. Does this mean that they don't care about their fans. No, of course not, they depend upon them just as every other musical group does. However, the difference for a developing band is a lot greater. It may be the difference between making it and almost making it, or it may not. You certainly don't want to find out the hard way, though.

There are a couple of things that are pretty much standard on a music social networking site, and you should look for these features in any online music social network you intend to join. One, they should provide you with ample ability to upload your personal images, album covers and musical tracks. You should have access to a blog feature, and be able to communicate back and forth with others on the site with ease. Connecting in, hearing other's music, and making friends and connections is a really great benefit of these sites as well. You might just find yourself touring with a band you met via one of your music social networks- you just never know what kind of connections could be made. While everyone dreams of being "found" it also helps to give a little assistance in making yourself visible to those who are doing the finding.

Want to buy and sell music online? Many music networking sites offer that feature, which works both ways for you- you can sell your own music as well as support other bands who you like by purchasing their directly from them. Some bands are even releasing Internet-only albums!
