Much is said about the time of year normally for the whole of August where there is a bit of a news black out. You could say this is because all the important business people and decision makers in the world are sunning themselves on some remote beach. As a result the media normally focus on reports about global warming, or make a relatively unimportant news story the talk of the town.

Luckily this August not only was the Olympics something to focus on, but there was also the very interesting US General Election race - notably the Democrat convention which was like no other show on earth. The excess was quite extraordinary but perhaps fitting for the build up to (hopefully) America's first black president. Compared to the rather flat Republican convention last week in which the main event was the nomination for Sarah Palin as the Vice President and then the ritualistic digging of dirt of all her Alaskan personal affairs, this was all incredibly exciting and news worthy stuff which the newspapers must have been very grateful for.

There was also the Olympics to report on, and there was a lot more than sport at stake here. Luckily China's human rights record, which has been on the agenda for months, did not play too much of a part in this remarkable showcase for a country where 10% of the population is still in poverty. It seemed to be a very well, militantly organised affair, with ugly toothless girls being replaced by more photogenic ones at the opening ceremony and 'rentacrowd' situations for the less riveting sports at the games, notably all of them in my opinion, (surely BMX racing is a step too far).

Still, for all the journalists this August, there was plenty for them to fill their papers with.
