How We Love Our Dogs

It's no surprise that many of us enjoy the companionship of a pet. It is estimated that there are approximately 74.8 million dogs owned in the United States alone!
Although there are more cat owners than dog owners, there are approximately 73 million cats owned in the United States. There are more dogs per household, as most cat owners own more than one cat, whereas there are more dog owners with just one dog.
Dogs help us is so many ways. Obviously, they give us unconditional love all the time as any cat or dog does, but with a dog there seems to be more active involvement. With a dog, walking is the big key to consider when thinking of buying or adopting a new dog as a pet.
Dogs need us to get out and do their business so it's a great excuse to get up and go and get some fresh air. Regardless of what the temperature is doing outside, your dog has to go every day so you can't hide inside for very long.
Therefore, dog owners are more active. They have to be in order to keep their pet happy. There is nothing better than going out for a brisk walk with your puppy on cool winter morning. It really is invigorating.
Dogs love to play and socialize with other dogs - for the most part anyway. There is one really nasty dog in our neighborhood that will rip apart any dog that comes near it, but that's not his fault I say, but the owner's. It is an owner's responsibility and duty to socialize your dog, regardless of what the dog's history and circumstances are.
I know it can be difficult, but you don't walk down the street and look at anyone who comes too close to you, growl at them and tell them to "f-off" just because. It's not socially acceptable with humans in society and it certainly is frowned upon in the doggy world too.
The other thing to consider is having more than one dog. If you are doing the work for one, having another one won't make much of a difference. I personally only have one dog but am seriously considering getting a second.
It comes down to if you can afford it and if you have the room to keep them both comfortable and keep your sanity intact. When I had a larger dog, I could not imagine having another one. He took up all the room we had. But, twenty-five percent of owners own two dogs so it's not unreasonable.
Most dogs are purchased with only ten percent of dogs being adopted from an animal shelter. This is mostly due to the fact that the majority of people want a puppy, and shelters don't have puppies too often, and people don't want to take in a stray that has been abused as it takes a considerable amount of time and patience and a great deal of compassion to gain the dog's trust.
We do go crazy for our dogs though. We buy them toys, beds, jewellery, gourmet food and snacks, luxury beds. The list is endless and manufacturers of dog paraphernalia are doing well and will continue to do so regardless of a recession. It seems we don't cut back spending when it comes to our pets because we think of them as "family".
So there you have it. Dogs are just plain good for you. They keep you entertained, keep you company, are great guard dogs (even if they pretend to be), help to keep you fit, and are really funny. Think about it, doesn't your dog make you laugh at least once a day?
