Losing a trusted family friend brings with it a great deal of sadness and grief. In our house, our pets are members of the family. Over the years, we had an assortment of four legged friends who have given us unconditional love and companionship.
Our animal friends have given us their loyalty and have relied on us for care and sustenance. Each of our pets possesses personality traits that at times seem almost human, creating a bond that for most of us is difficult to break. The grief that accompanies the loss of a trusted family pet can be quite intense, even devastating.
As pet owners, we can develop emotional connections with our animal friends that can be deeply spiritual. My dear wife believes that someday she will be united with all of the animals that have been part of her life. Whether in heaven or at Rainbow Bridge, she hopes to once again see her beloved friends.
For pet owners who have suffered a loss, the process of grieving is not unlike that experienced after the loss of a human loved one. The psychological and physical toll can be severe and even debilitating. In an effort to ease the pain, many pet owners will refer back to favorite photographs and other items of memorabilia.
Permanent types of pet memorials have been growing in popularity among pet owners. Pet memorials can take a variety of forms including headstones, plaques, statues and other types of long lasting symbols. It is undeniable that many pet owners consider their pets to be part of the family in some cases as a replacement for children. The love, attention and affection shown for pets in life, most certainly extends to pets in death.
The dramatic rise in popularity for pet memorial products coincides with the growth in services available to bereaved pet owners. Pet cemeteries and mortuaries can provide the bereaved the same services and compassion offered by human mortuaries. From simple burials and cremations, pet owners can select from burial and memorial services, pet size caskets and urns, and burial services. At some larger pet cemeteries there are even above ground mausoleums.
Still, many pet owners choose to intern their beloved pets at home. My wife and I have a plot on the hill above our home next to a century old barn. The plot has become the final resting place for several dogs and cats who have passed through our lives over the years. In fact, the previous owner our property made us pledge to not disturb the grave of his beloved dog. We have gladly honored that pledge.
As an alternative to burial, cremation is an option for many pet owners. Our society has become more mobile making permanent burial a less attractive option. For pet owners who prefer to keep their pets remains with them, cremation can be a more practical option. Taking cremation a step farther, some pet owners opt to have the ashes turned into diamonds. Though this is an expensive option, the result is unique and beautiful way to memorialize a beloved pet.
For those of us who lack the financial means to own doggie diamonds, there are other less expensive though equally beautiful ways to create a pet memorial. Memory boxes and baskets are designed to hold memorabilia such as identification tags, toys, and other artifacts of the animals life. Garden stones and other permanent pet memorials are also popular and inexpensive ways to keep alive the memory of our beloved animal companions.
So whether you just want to memorialize your companion or plan to meet your deceased pets at Rainbow Bridge coping with the loss of a trusted animal can be made easier.
