You first must remove as much urine from the carpet as possible. Be sure to wet stains that have already dried with water so that you can get some of the urine out. Heat should not be used since the stain and odor could be set permanently in your carpeting. White towels or white paper towels should be used to soak up the urine as colored ones could leave color on your carpet. Books or other heavy objects should be placed on top of the towels so that urine down in the pad will be removed, too. Using your foot to apply pressure is not advisable as you may get urine on your shoe and track it onto clean carpeting.
When the carpet has dried, use a cleaner specially formulated to remove cat urine on the stain and surrounding carpet. Common household cleaners will not do an adequate job at removing the odor as the urine needs to be broken down into substances that can be removed which requires chemical action. Good cleaners for the job will contain bacteria, enzymes, chemicals or a combination of the three. Never use ammonia since your cat may think that the ammonia smell is actually cat urine and urinate in the area again.
Before applying the cleaner, be sure to test on a small patch of carpet to check for colorfastness. The stain and surrounding area should be soaked thoroughly with the cleaner. Put foil or plastic wrap over the cleaner which will allow the carpet to stay wet longer, giving the cleaner more time work on the stain.
When the carpet is dry, baking soda can be sprinkled over the spot and then vacuumed up. Now, check to see if the cat urine odor is completely gone. If not, repeat the steps above, and treat a larger area in case part of the padding was missed.
If the smell remains after two treatments, replacing the padding will be necessary. When you pull the carpet and padding up, be sure to treat the underlying subfloor with a sealant in case your cat has future accidents. This will prevent urine from getting in the concrete or wood beneath your carpet and causing a persistent, lingering odor.
Removing cat urine from carpet can be difficult, but is often possible if the correct steps and proper cat urine removal cleaner are used.
