The American Pit Bull Terrier and related breeds such as the American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier are all referred to as "pit bulls." These breeds, along with the German Shepherd, the Doberman Pinscher, and the Rottweiler have been termed as "dangerous dog," following newspaper reports of pit bull attacks. Pit Bull Chat website is dedicated to the preservation of the pit bull as a loving companion pet and top competitor in weight pull competitions and conformation shows. We oppose all forms of cruelty to animals and do not promote any illegal activities.
Widespread misinformation has resulted in the pit bull being represented as a fearsome beast. The false perception of them being dangerous has resulted in breed-specific legislation banning pit bulls. Surveys reveal that over 80 % of Americans are unable to accurately identify the American Pit Bull Terrier. The American Pit Bull Terrier is a descendent of the fighting dogs that came from England and Ireland in the late 19th and early 20th century. Though some experts dispute its heritage, the pit bull terrier is generally thought to be a cross between the original English Bulldog and a smaller, game terrier. This cross was then refined on American soil.
The fighting dogs were regularly separated from the pits and the pit bulls were bred to be exclusively handled by humans. The American Pit Bull Terrier that would injure humans, without human error or provocation, was removed from breeding stock.
Their unique gameness allows them to excel as working dogs in sports like hog hunting and weight pulling. Their friendliness to humans makes them unsuitable as guard dogs. They are however powerful athletes. They must be supervised around young children, as do all dogs. They tend to display protective instincts to defend their family and property. On the contrary, they do not need to be trained to fight other dogs. It is in their nature. It can be controlled through supervision and separation of dogs.
It is the duty of the owners to take on the responsibility to supervise the dogs around other dogs, cats or pets. Sometimes they should be retained as the only pets at home.
The site also provides information on pit bull terrier rescue and show events all over the country. You get to know about obedience, training and health care of the pit bulls. You can update your knowledge of their history and behavior patterns through the numerous magazines and books listed with us. We also offer reviews of pet products, chew toys, exercise equipment and dog food.
We do not condone the indiscriminate breeding of pit bulls, and do not allow posts relating to dogs for sale or stud, because numerous pit bulls are being put to death in America's shelters everyday. We do encourage limited breeding programmes for future generations. Though most Americans do not recognize it, there exists an entire culture and way of life in the United States built around caring for and raising American Pit Bull Terrier.
