I had been a registered Democrat for over 35 years and all my life I've always been proud to be an American. One of the things I don't take lightly is voting and out of all the years I have been voting, this election of 2008 has become one of the most important and most serious elections I or anyone else may ever vote in.
During this election we are looking at two candidates with different views on solving our problems. In this election we need to try to vote logically and not let our emotions get involved. The way I look at voting is as if I'm hiring someone for a job, which in reality, I am. There has been a lot of mud slinging on both sides as usual, but for now let's just stay with the facts.
One thing about the elections that are held today, we can find out a lot more information about someone then we could prior to the internet. One example is researching voting records.
After watching all the debates and gathering all the information I can find about the two candidates, I took a piece of paper and went down my list of issues I think are the most important facing Americans today. I put a check mark next to the name of the candidate I thought would be the best person that could handle that issue.
My first issue was on experience. It wasn't even close in this category, I gave McCain a check on that. Obama spent less then a year in the U.S. Senate before running for president, that's a little too fast in my judgment. You can't get most management jobs in this country with less then a years experience and being president really is not on the job training. He may be a good speaker but being a good speaker isn't enough to be president. Being president is one of the toughest jobs there is in the world.
On the issue of defense, who I think has the most experience and would be better for the job. First, Obama has no experience and even Senator Biden said we will have an international crises and that certain countries will test Obama within the first six months if Obama is elected. I don't think we need any more trouble then we already have at this time, that would only make things worse. I gave McCain a check on that.
On the issue of the economy I looked at both economic plans and according to some experts, Obama's plan would cost a little more then McCain's plan. To be honest I'm not sure I like either one of their plans. Plus the question in my mind is how would they pay for them.
I do know that Obama plans on raising corporate taxes, capital gains taxes and a few more types of taxes. He also wants to spread the wealth around by taking from those that make over $250,000 a year and giving it to those that do not have that much. What's happening to the American dream already is that the more money you make on your job the higher you are taxed. I don't begrudge anyone from making a good living and trying to live the American dream.
One thing you do not want to do to the economy right now is raise any taxes at all!
The Democrats call the Republican economics, trickle down economics and say that it's not that fast, that it takes time to work, which is not true.
Here is an example of the trickle down effect. This year in 2008, the government raised the minimum wage. I love chili dogs and once and awhile I buy one. The day right after they raised the minimum wage, I bought a chili dog and it cost me 10 cents more.
Okay, you may think that 10 cents is not a lot of money and it's not. But, since this was a nation wide chain and lets say that company sold one million chili dogs a day, which is possible, look at McDonalds. That would be $100,000 a day that the company passed on to the consumer across the country. Over a year, 365 days, that would be $36,500,000.00 and that is a lot of extra cost passed on to the consumers.
Every time the government raises the minimum wage it causes inflation. So why not keep minimum wage were it is for ever and people can do what I did which is work hard and show the company you work for that you are worth giving a raise too.
The same thing applies to taxes. All you college students pay close attention to this if you plan on getting a job after you graduate from school. If Obama raises taxes on companies that make over $250,000 a year, those companies have three choices. They either have to cut salaries, lay people off or charge more for their products or services. Either way it will hurt the economy.
Okay, how many companies and people would that affect? Think about this. Do you buy clothes, electronics, appliances or gas etc.? Do you think that all those companies are only going to make enough products so they stay under $250,000 a year? NO, they will pass the cost of the tax on to you the consumer.
If Obama raises taxes and gives money to low income or unemployed people, don't you think that the raising cost of those products and services will affect them along with everyone else in the country?
So, on the issue of the economy, because I think raising taxes will hurt the economy and the American people, I give a check to McCain.
Side Note: Before Obama became a U.S. Senator he was a lawyer and filed a lawsuit against Citibank and won. This forced Citibank to make more home loans to people that really couldn't afford to pay the money back. Now we know that it was not a good idea because we've had many banks fail.
In an interview, Obama stated that it was a good idea that didn't work. Maybe his heart was in the right place, but I don't think it was a well thought out plan.
At the beginning of the economic crises I blamed President Bush for what happened. After some research I found out that back in 2003 President Bush warned about what did happen with Fannie May and Freddie Mac and wanted more oversight. In 2004 the Republican party introduced a bill with oversights for Fannie May and Freddie Mac and it was defeated. 100% of the Democrats voted against it and 100% of the Republicans voted for it.
Each political party fights against each other, putting their own party first and not really working together for the people.
Everyone wants change and so do I. I may not agree with John McCain 100%, but I don't have to. This election shouldn't be about politics or political parties, it should be about the American people and what's good for America.
John McCain stated he will make those that add pork to bills famous. I for one will try to be more aware of what our elected officials, our employees, are doing. People, we need to get our government back and under control. Remember they work for the people, but it now seems that the people are working for them.
I'm for less government being in control of our lives. In my life time I have been fortunate to be part of a generation that witnessed and benefited from rapid advances in technology, communications, science and medicine, all pioneered by American entrepreneurs who changed this country and made it the most powerful country in the world.
Just get the government and special interest groups out of the way and let the American people, the entrepreneurs create jobs and let everyone profit. I believe John McCain shares this same view, but the American people need to also be more involved so we can make the changes we need happen faster.
