Some webmasters design and create these arcade games to play sites for a variety of reasons. Some just like playing free online flash games and want their very own arcade site. Some want to make money either from advertising or selling the site and that is the sole purpose for them creating it, and others it's a little bit of both.
So how do these people make money anyways if they don't charge any money for you to play their free flash games? They make money by selling ad space or using an advertising company to display ads on the site. Some webmasters also sell links on their sites, but since Google has been cracking down on webmasters buying and selling links for either monetary gain or to try and manipulate the rankings by purchasing links containing the keyphrase that their targetting this option is rarely used by site owners today.
Let's take a look at the various types of ad's that can be seen and used on these free flash games arcade sites.
Banner Ad's - These ads are simple image ads that links to the advertisee's website. The sizes of these ads can pretty much be any size but the most common ad sizes are: 468x60, 728x90, 120x600, 160x600, 200x200, 250x250, 300x250, 336,280. These are the most commonly used forms of advertising on any free online arcade website.
Text Ad's - Basic links that may or may not have a description of the website with it.
PicText Ad's - These ad's are like the basic text ads with a link and description but are also accompanied by a small image that you can have related to your website or the ad being displayed.
Popup/Popunder Ad's - These ad's aren't commonly found on arcade sites, in fact most users find these ad's extremely annoying and a lot of users will not return to a free flash games arcade site if they use popup or popunder ads. These ads open another window in your browser displaying an advertisement in them.
Roll Over Ad's - You may have noticed on websites that some words will be underlined, and when you put your mouse over these words a small popup ad appears above your mouse. This is a roll over ads. Although not commonly used on arcade websites, they are found on a small percentage of them.
Peel Away Ad's - These advertisements look pretty cool but yet again aren't found commonly on online arcade sites. In one of the top corners of the page you will see an image as if the page was peeled back a little bit. When your mouse goes over this image the page peels back revealing an advertisement underneath of it.
Interstitial/Transition Ad's - These ad's can be defined as "Something in Between". Some arcade sites use interstital ad's before gameplay screens or after a certain number of pages a user navigates to. These usually fade in or display a full page advertisement that has usually a 10 or 15 second countdown that will automatically continue to the next page when the time elapses or there may be a "Skip" button that you can press to proceed without waiting for the time to elapse.
There are also different types of advertising companies that pay you different ways. Some pay you so much per click, other pay you so much per impression, and some are a combination of both.
CPC - Cost Per Click - You are paid so much per click, the amount you make off each click usually varies with user's location, unique ip address, and a few other factors. These advertising companies are good if you have a moderate to good CTR (Click Through Ratio)
CPM - Cost Per Thousand Impressions - You are paid for the amount of times that ad's are actually shown to your user's. These are good if you have a lot of traffic but a low CTR (Click Through Ratio).
The most common advertising company used on arcade sites is Google AdSense. Some of the other major ad companies that you may find on arcade sites is AdBrite and Yahoo! Publisher Network. However there are many many other advertising companies, and even some arcade owners choose to sell their own private ads.
