You may be wondering what I am talking about and so I should explain.
So many sites on the internet that are dedicated to women poker players are blatantly and unapologetically letchy. Men bare no bones about drooling over female poker players at the table and off it, referring to women not in terms of skill but in terms of physical appearance.
This may be a sad day for feminism but boy is it a good day for female poker players’ bank accounts. There may be more women playing poker now that ever before but many men are simply getting no wiser. I find it almost hysterical to watch a good looking female play a man in more than one way on the poker table. I’m just fascinated by how quickly these guys conform to stereotype effectively letting the woman clear up the game. Afterwards, still unaware that the flirting was just a ploy these guys are still convinced that they had been found generally irresistible by these wily women, unbelievable!
Whilst many men welcome women at the poker table, some are still put off by the proposition of a possible distraction. Men wanted women out of religion, politics, golf clubs, drinking clubs you name it! Just because poker is no more accessible to women now doesn’t mean that it’s completely welcoming. You can see an aura of mistrust cloud over a male table when a woman enters the room and you know if some of these men had the choice, the willing damsel would only be walking in to deliver the drinks.
Many poker playing women learned their game from an older brother and his friends resulting in a confident and comfortable attitude around men. Exuding confidence and femininity is often viewed as a threat so as a result many women poker players feel uncomfortable playing in bars or casino poker rooms, or they hide their femininity in a bid to ‘fit in’ with the men.
A way for women to escape from gender stereotyping is to play online. Online poker, especially on established sites like skypoker.com, is a good way to ensure that you are competing using only skill as someone’s looks and mannerisms are taken out of the equation. I used to think that half the fun of poker was the ‘poker face’ but playing online help many people develop their skills in a less self conscious environment. It is also a way for the experienced poker player to sharpen their skills and many famous poker players are known to log on and compete with others on lower stakes levels, giving the average player a good run for their money. A quality resource is SkyPoker.
So here is a call to women everywhere to get online and learn your new trade, you already know how to read guys all you need to know now are the rules of poker.
When you have gained the skills get out and pay those bills!
