• Texas Hold ‘Em – This is probably the most popular poker game around. It is quite fast-paced, meaning that you can get through a few games in less time and that players aren’t sat out for very long if they decide to fold. Each player is given two private cards, placed face-down in front of them, and five community cards, face-up in the middle of the table, to be shared by all the players. The winner is the person with the best hand when all bets have been taken.
• Omaha Hi – Another popular game, in which each player receives four private cards and five shared community cards. Players create their best hand by using any two of their four private cards, and any three of the community cards. As with Texas Hold ‘Em, the highest value hand wins the game once all betting has been carried-out.
• Seven Card Stud – This game involves the players placing an ‘ante’, which is money put into the pot before they see their cards, like a qualifying bet for the game. Players are given three private cards and four face-up community cards and create their highest hand using five out of the seven cards available to them.
• Five Card Draw – This is the traditional way to play poker, and is the oldest of the game types around. Each player places an ‘ante’ bet, as with Seven Card Stud, but in Five Card Draw, they receive five face-down cards and may discard and draw as many of their cards as they like. After two betting rounds, the showdown occurs and the person with the highest-scoring hand wins the pot.
