The town of Milton, Ontario has a population of just around 55,000, but its location in the Greater Toronto area has made it the fastest growing community in the country. The town is also host of one of the most unique events in Canada, as every year on the Labour Day weekend the town puts on its annual Steam-Era Festival.

Steam; a part of our history!

There was a time not too long ago when it was steam power that drove almost all of the machines of industry. Everything from agriculture to transportation depended on the power that heated water provided, and day-to-day life was greatly enhanced by this innovation. Electricity and later fuel would take the place of steam however, but each year in Milton, residents, neighbours, and people from all over the continent pay tribute to our past through the presentation of thousands of preserved steam vehicles.

Steam-Era: for hobbyists and tourists alike!

The Ontario Steam and Antique Preservers Association, whose goal is to preserve and restore heritage equipment, put the Steam Era Festival together. As a reminder of the world in which our grandparents lived, the preservation of these vehicles is a critical link in understanding our past.

We have probably all heard of steam train engines, and every year you can count on seeing a couple of beauties making their way around the fair grounds. There are also stationary engines, steam powered tractors, as well as antique cars from the steam era. You can also take in some of the agricultural and model displays that seek to recreate life as it was in the rural countryside of Canada over a century ago.

Like any good festival, the Steam Era Festival in Milton does not just have displays for people to look at. There are plenty of activities that the whole family can enjoy, from country and western shows to pedal tractor displays and even logging activities. And of course, the food is some of the best home cooking that you could find anywhere!

If you happen to be in the Milton area around the Labour Day weekend, the Steam Era Festival is certainly worth taking the time to see.
