When you are an addict you may not recognize yourself when you look in the mirror. The shame and stresses associated with your addiction etch their pain into your eyes; you can no longer see yourself as the person that you were before addiction started to take hold of your daily routine. Your family, marriage, and sometimes even your job will suffer in the grip of your “demons”. It hardly seems fair that your own issues with taking care of your every day life should extend to the people that depend on you and love you. Your faith may be shattered, as it can be difficult for a Christian to hold to their image of the loving God when they are subject to such pain.
The truth is that addiction in its many forms has taken hold of a great deal of the world’s population. Addicts do not need to use drugs, they don’t have to drink alcohol, and they don’t even have to gamble away their life savings in order to be an addict. Sometimes the paraphernalia that you will find hidden in the bottom of your addict’s closet will be porn. You may think that we all enjoy sex and that sex addiction is a cop out, but that’s the same as saying that just because I enjoy a glass of wine with pasta that I am equally as subject to alcohol addiction as someone that drinks mouthwash for want of an open liquor store.
A person that suffers from a sexual addiction uses sex as a crutch to try to balance difficulties in his or her life. They may find that they have an uncontrollable urge to reach out to pornography and masturbation, which triggers a sort of natural high that lasts only a short while associated with arousal and orgasm. The good news is that there is a high quality therapist trained in this very field somewhere close to you, a professional that can guide you in the comfort of a confidential setting toward the road to recovery.
When you find the proper counsellor you can receive the benefits of a treatment plan that works for your personal lifestyle and start healing not just yourself, but also your family. Rather than spending hours attached to a movie or the internet, you can spend time rebuilding your relationship with your loved ones, because they need to start a healing process, too.
You may be a sex addict, and that carries its own stigma, but you do not need to be afraid of who you are. There is qualified help out there just waiting to help you to become whole. Life does not need to be this hard, there is someone waiting to help you plan a course of therapy that will help you overcome your compulsive behaviours. Sexual addiction is a disorder that needs to be assessed by someone that has experience in this field. They know what you are going through, and how to help you learn healthy behaviours so that you can begin to recognize yourself in the mirror again.
