Get the proper shots for Yellow Fever. If you have not done so, you will not be allowed to enter the country.
Don’t take anything around with you that you that you don’t really need, as it will weigh you down and increase the risk of your being a victim of crime.
It's a good idea to make photocopies of your passport and Brazilian visa then only carry these copies with you for identification purposes. The last thing you want to be doing is trying to get replacement papers if they are lost or stolen on holiday.
Avoid very crowded areas, as these can put you at greater risk of being pickpocketed.
If you’re alone, avoid deserted streets and dark alleyways.
Beware of unlicensed cabs, as these can be dangerous. Some unlicensed drivers have been known to portray themselves as real taxis, when they are anything but. Just have your hotel clerk call a taxi for you. Also, real taxis have red or maroon license plates, but this is no guarantee.
Put your wallet in your front pocket, or better still, an under-clothes money belt in order to make it harder for people to steal it.
It's a good idea not to wear pricey jewellery and watches. Just get yourself a cheap watch and wear that while you’re away.
If you have a purse or a handbag with a strap, wear it laterally across your shoulders instead of having it slung over one shoulder, as this will make bag snatching more difficult.
Stay away from favelas, as they can sometimes be very violent places swarming with criminals.
Only drink water from sealed bottles, as the tap water in Brazil isn’t always that clean.
Brazil is a hot place, so be sure to stay hydrated by drinking at least two litres of mineral water or coconut water per day.
Don’t stay too long in the sun, and wear sun lotion with the highest SPF you can find.
There are disease-carrying mosquitoes in some parts of Brazil, so be sure to apply insect repellent before you get bitten.
