Dogs use barking to communicate. However, if your dog’s barking is frequent and excessive that disrupts your neighbor or your sleep, you need to find ways to control it. Properly identifying the cause of barking is an important step in controlling them. Determine the incident that triggers that barking of your dog and remedy the situation. If you cannot, a bark control device would be an ideal option.

There are two basic models of bark control, the automatic and the handheld. The automatic units are appropriate when the owner is not around to control the barking of the dog. Examples of these automatic bark controls are the citronella sprays, tone correction, and the tone stimulation collar which works based on the same principle. They activate and introduce corrective stimulus when the dog barks. Citronella spray collar is gaining popularity and considered as the humane type of bark control collar. This type of collar sprays citronella in the face of the dog when the dog barks that can startle them and disrupt the barking. Stimulation collars activate by sensing the sound of barking and vocal cord vibration and emit a static electrical. This static electrical are not emitted not to harm the dog but to create a disruption on their barking. The handheld units are ideal when you are walking your dog and have the tendency of barking to people. Handheld units includes the choke and prong collars. The collar slides to tighten on the neck of your dog when the correction is given. These types of collar are also used on other training such as obedience training.

These bark control device are effective tool for behavior modification of your dog. Your dog does not necessarily need to wear these devices forever. Once the training is complete you can remove the collar. You need a little patience in training your dog for it may take several days. Consult also a veterinarian in purchasing a bark control collar that is suitable for your dog.
