A Baby Shower is a Time To Rejoice!

The arrival of a baby is certainly a thrilling time and a time to celebrate but it is also normally an anxious time with you running around ensuring that you have everything you need and worrying about whether or not you will be able to cope. This of course is especially true if this is your first baby.

The idea for the baby shower came about as a time for family and friends to be together prior to the baby's arrival and to help relieve the financial burden on parents-to-be by giving them many of the accessories and furnishings which they will need once their baby is born.

Despite the fact that today the majority of people prefer to break away from the traditional mold when it comes to a baby shower, on the whole these events still stick largely to traditional guidelines. Probably one of the most noticeable changes to the baby shower format is that they are no longer exclusively the preserve of women and lots of men make it onto today's guest list and are more than happy to join in. While they may not play all of the baby shower games, men do like the opportunity to give their best wishes to the expectant parents.

It should be noted though that in certain cultures baby showers are considered a sign of bad luck and so, if it is possible that the expectant mother might feel this way, you should be sure to check before having a baby shower.

In some countries the baby shower is actually held after the arrival of the baby while it others it takes place prior to the birth. In a lot of ways it is a good idea to hold the shower following the birth because a baby shower is after all a celebration of arrival of the new baby and guests enjoy actually seeing the focal figure of the celebration. It also makes it far easier to select gender-appropriate gifts and colors and, if your gift needs engraving, then your guests have all the details they need.

Although having the baby shower after the birth of the baby does make sense it is a very busy time for new parents and many of the baby items the parents need are required as soon as the baby arrives home. For this reason holding the baby shower before the birth of the baby is becoming a more common option.

The baby shower itself is traditional and for the most part every shower requires the same sort of planning and activities. A guest list will have to be compiled, a venue selected and invitations mailed out. The shower venue then has to be decorated and food, drink and games organized. In addition, because this is a very special event, you may want to consider having a musician or other performer participating in the festivities and a photographer to record the day.

A baby shower can evolve into a big event with a lot of things to arrange that are going to end up costing a lot of money. As a result it is advisable to draw up a budget for the event before you start and then make sure that you keep to it.

Pulling off a memorable baby shower does not take any special talent but it does take a carefully thought out plan which includes a budget and a timeline.
