Hoodia A Scam for Fat Control, or Does it Work.
Much has been said about the "miracle" weight loss tablet, and the thing many people are asking does it actually work for weight problems? With millions of dollars being spent on hoodia all over the world, if the marketers hype proves true, we must be getting close to the end of obesity as we know it. I wish it was that easy to Fat Problems...
Firstly we always need to make the point between short term weight problems and lasting weight problems. The rate of regain after weight problems programs is staggering, I have seen statistics showing as much as 80% of people who lose fat will be back to their prevous weight within 3 years, but conservtively close to two thirds of people will regain their weight. It is crutially important to address the success of a weight problems program by its success long term not just what it does in the short term.
We have to ask does Hoodia work long term for weight problems? In this article I'm going to go behind the marketing hype to see if we can find what’s really happening.
If you were to type Hoodia into Google I’m sure you would get thousands of websites promoting Hoodia and most of them will make claims of some fairly astoinishing results. I believe it is very important to look at the facts about hoodia and other weight problems supplements so that you may avoid another weight problems scam.
In this piece I make some generalisations about companies selling these supplements, and I just wanted to say that not all companies selling them are bad, some will be honest and are selling the real stuff, but you need to know that it is very easy for some dishonest companies to sell pills with cheap or bogus ingredients in them disguised as hoodia. I’m also not going to get into the specifics of weather or not hoodia works but I’m going to give you some information so that you can make up your own mind.
The marketing for Hoodia sounds great, who wouldn’t want to sit on your lounge all day, take a couple of pills and have your extra weight simply melt off your body, but does this really sound like a good healthy strategy. If you look at the history of quick sloutions over the years as I have you will know that they very rarely work, and when they do the chances of you staying thin are virtually impossible. Quick fixes for weight problems will never work long term as they are simply working against the homeostasis of your body, for every miracle weight problems pill there is a long list of negative side effects.
It is amazing how many people I hear from who tell me they completely believed the marketing, and why wouldn’t they the advertising is very good, they bought $100 worth of pills and saw absolutely no results from it, a complete waste of money. As you will see shortly the market is full of counterfeit products which may not contain any hoodia.
When you first hear of the miracle cure for weight problems it is hard not to believe it has some promise, I may have believed it too if I didn’t know the history of these pills. The talk began a few years ago when a poplar late night TV show showed the exciting new weight problems pill. Very soon after this the internet lit up and late night marketers didn’t take long to tell the sleepless about how they could solve all their weight problems. While legitimate companies began trying to get their hands on some hoodia, billions of spam mail started advertising junk herbs that their senders had thrown into capsules to make some quick money, at the expense of frustrated dieters.
Used by native tribes in southern Africa over generations to suppress their appetite over their long journeys, hoodia in its natural state in theory should work as a decent appetite suppressant (although if you have read more of my articles you will know suppressing your appetite is rarely a good idea). In the United States and many other countries around the world regulation of supplements is still very limited, allowing almost anyone to make their own and sell it quickly; this problem ensures a high probability of being ripped off.
Hoodia is actually a slowly growing plant and it is only grown in a small region in the south of Africa. In spite of the fact supply is severely limited the amount of "hoodia" sold around the world is surprisingly high. You can make up your own mind but for me I seems like a large amount of the hoodia sold must be counterfeit.
Not only are the regulations on these pills not in your favour but even now there are no legitimate research studies that show the small amounts of hoodia extract in the pills sold actually does anything for weight problems in humans at all.
An important point on appetite suppressants, they are rarely a good idea. When you feel hungry or have cravings your body is giving you a hint that it needs more nutrients to keep your body working in good order. Although sometimes these cravings can be misguided (like cravings for sugar or junk food) these are important signals to listen to as eating regularly and feeding your body the nutrients it needs is essential to maintaining a high metabolism. A lower metabolism can only lead to one thing: Regaining more weight than you started with.
This leaves you two big problems:
1. The pills you buy may not even be real.
2. Even if you are buying the real thing (many of the larger supplement buisnesses are honest) there is no proof that the extract used in these pills will work for you (as apposed to the whole plant) and will result in lasting weight problems
So does hoodia work? The jury is still out on this one, there needs to be much more long term study before we will have an answer, but with all the problems associated with it and the problems associated with appetite suppressants and long term weight problems it is highly unlikely that it will work for you.
This is something I hear myself saying often... There are no quick sloutions, ultimately we all need to deal with the problems that caused us to gain extra fat in the first place. If you honestly want to lose fat and feel good there is plenty of credible research proving that real activity and a diet of nutritious real whole foods works consistantly for weight problems. It’s not the sexy quick fix I know your looking for but it does work.
