Diane is a securities broker in one of the hottest firms in the east. She works in one of the most modern skyscrapers in the city and perhaps the country. She is tops in the securities game and not afraid to show it. Diane has an office on the 50th floor of her building. It is symbolic of where she is in the company. If you reside on the 50th floor you are considered a top executive. Each morning she ride the elevator from her parking lot to her office. She never experiences any problems during her routine. The elevators are usually filled with other people trying to get to their destinations. One day on the way up to her floor, the elevator stopped on the 7th Floor. A man got on dress in a delivery uniform. She thought it was a bit unusual because here is a guy in a delivery uniform in an elevator full of suits. She was not alone so she did not worry about it. He pushed the button for the 42 Floor. She thought that was weird because they were renovating the 42 floor and only the workers were allowed there. She thought, maybe one of the workers is having something delivered. The elevator was starting to loose passengers. By the time it got to the 40th floor it was just Diane and the delivery guy. She was starting to get a little nervous. She remembered at you should never to be on an elevator alone with a stranger. As the elevator approached the 42 floor the guy prepared to get off. She thought what a relief hes getting off. The elevator stopped the doors opened and the guy grabbed Diane and shoved her through the elevator door into the hallway. He told her not to scream because he knew that the floor was empty and no one could here her. He held a knife close to her neck. At that time a touch up worker, who was left on that floor to complete some work, heard them talking. He jumped out hit the assailant in the head with a pole handle from one of his tools. He knocked the guy unconscious, and they ran to safety and summoned security. The guy was still unconscious when they handcuff and him and held him for police. He was charged with assault. Elevators are for our convenence. Can you imagine having to walk 3 or 4 hundred flights of stairs each day? It is never a good idea to ride an elevator alone with someone that you feel may do you harm. Follow your instincts. If it feels bad just wait for the next elevator. Crimes have been committed in elevators. They range from pickpocketing, to assault and even rape. If the elevator is in a building of an unsafe neighborhood, have other people ride it with you. There is safety in numbers. You can take the stairs if you think they are safer. You should always stand to the rear of an elevator this gives you a chance to view everyone on the elevator and see others getting on. If someone seems suspicious get off the elevator and catch the next one to your destination. Keep all of your possessions close to you to prevent pickpocketing.
